PROBLEM

REMEDY

I receive an ERROR MESSAGE when I attempt to listen to music.

Contact us via e-mail, providing the specific error message you are receiving.

The music clip downloads first, then plays; I want to hear the music immediately.

RealPlayer has to be set for "Instant Playback" in order for you to hear the music almost immediately. To find out whether your version of RealPlayer is configured for "Instant Playback," open the RealPlayer and select "View" and then "Preferences...."  Then, select the "Performance" tab and look for the "Playback from Web links" section.  Select the "Settings..." button and place a check mark next to "Enable instant playback."  Finally, under "Select how RealPlayer should treat clips using instant playback," choose "Play."  Be sure to click "Okay" and then "Okay" a second time when exiting.  Now, whenever you visit a web site and select a music clip that has not been specifically set up to "stream," it will play almost immediately.

The music clip downloads but does not play.

Do you have an MP3 player installed?  If so, it may not be set as your default MP3 player.  To set RealPlayer as your default player for MP3 files, open RealPlayer and select "View" and then "Preferences...."  Then, select the "Upgrade" tab and look for "Media Types."  Select the "Re-associate" button and, if "MP3" appears in the window, be sure to place a check mark next to it.  Then, click "Okay" and then "Okay" a second time.  MP3 files will now be played, by default, by your RealPlayer.  See the note about "Instant Playback" above if the music doesn't play immediately.

The music plays, but I have to wait a few seconds before the music starts.

This is normal.  RealPlayer typically buffers a portion of the clip to memory first, and then begins playing it while continuing to download the rest of the clip.

The music plays, but play is interrupted one or more times.

Select a lower quality clip.  "Medium quality" should play smoothly and without interruption on a 56K modem with a good connection.  Use "low quality" if your modem is slower.

The music plays, but it doesn't save to my computer.

If you want the file to save, your MP3 player must be configured to save the music file, rather than just play it.  To configure RealPlayer to save the file, open RealPlayer and select "View" and then "Preferences...."  Then, select the "Performance" tab and look for the "Playback from Web links" section.  Select the "Settings..." button and under "Select how RealPlayer should treat clips using instant playback," choose "Play and save," or whatever option is most appropriate.  Be sure to click "Okay" and then "Okay" a second time when exiting.

I don't want to download RealPlayer.

Why not?  It's free and you can use your RealPlayer to play music and video from thousands of web sites besides this one.  It is the current standard for transmission of such content on the Internet.  And, once you have downloaded and installed it, you won't have to bother with it again.  Visiting a web site that uses RealPlayer content will cause your RealPlayer to automatically play such material.  (Real.com offers a version of RealPlayer that is not free; you don't need this version to enjoy the music on this site or any other site.  The version of RealPlayer that is for sale offers additional features not found on the free version, which is perfectly suitable for most users.)
